Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells

Let's go all hippy on ya, is there anyone out there who doesn't have this?Amazing album from Mike Oldfield considering he is supposed to have played all the instruments himself.
Part of side one was famously used in the Exorcist which like this record is still good despite it's age.
I listen to this about once a year, so that's about 36 times so far :)
One thought always crosses my mind is that if this album had faded into obscurity when it was released would Richard Branston have also faded into obscurity? as this was the project that got his Virgin empire on the map.

I used to have the vinyl version but I can't find it? I don't remember selling it so it must have been "borrowed" by some thieving git?
So I hope this CD version is the same (although I'm guessing ZTT made this slightly different so we would all shell out for it again).

Briefly owned the standard 12" version of this but this version is superior by a mile so I just kept this one.
The 12 minute version of Pleasuredome features a nice opening dialogue (possibly by Geoffrey Palmer?) before launching into the main track.
Great collection of tracks on the B side with cover versions of T-Rex's Get it on and a live version of Springsteen's Born to run plus Happy hi.

Frankie's Christmassy tune came in a nice gift sleeve which was impossible not to tear if you wanted the listen to the record.
The nine and a half minute version of Power features Red Dwarf's Chris Barrie doing his best Mike Read and Ronald Reagan impressions before the song.
I wasn't sure where track 3 ends and 4 begins, also they are listed in the wrong order on the disc.

Yes I admit I fell for the second great Rock n' Roll swindle of buying the multiple releases of every Frankie track during their golden period of the mid eighties.
This one was bought on 7", 12" and cassette.
I have the 7" and 2 x 12" versions left, although I didn't realise when buying them that my 2 12" version were exactly the same apart from one having a picture sleeve and one a plain black one.
I have some decent versions of the cassette versions with alternate mixes, here's the 12" version.

Was listening to an old John Peel show and he mentioned this which I'd forgotten about luckily I checked the old files and found I already had it.
Basically the best of Bristol's "new wave" scene from the late seventies and it sounds great :)
Strangely the first track starts with a Peel clip mentioning this album, although it says there are only 15 tracks? so I have to assume this is a later version.

No Doubt - Hella Good

I like some of the early No Doubt although Gwen Stefani has gone down the more commercial R'n'B route over the last few years, which is her choice of course.
Found this recently behind one of my kid's cupboards and it looks like he never played it so not sure why he bought it? unless it was during that period he was going to be a superstar DJ before deciding to go off to college to be a film director instead?

I know some records are improved at a higher BPM this isn't one, Quite clearly states 45rpm but Pinky and Perky strike again if you try it? should be 33rpm.

Maggie Bell - Hazell

Theme tune from an old UK TV detective show starring Nicholas Ball who was a recent villain in Eastenders and does hotel ads with Lenny Henry.
As I remember the series was written by dodgy football manager Terry Venables!!
Despite this it's a great song from the always impressive voice of Maggie Bell.
Also I think it's the only record I've ever owned on the Swansong label that wasn't Led Zeppelin.

1970 classic from Edwin Starr which passed me by at the time (as did most songs until the early seventies).
Gained a new lease of life when Frankie did their version in the mid eighties.
The B side "he who picks a rose" has a nice Northern soul feel to it.

This is such a brilliant song with the talking introduction not included on most Motown compilations.

George Bad Benson - Supership

Disco tune from George "Bad" Benson from 1975 not really what most of associate him with, the B side is more like the classic Benson guitar sound.

I'm sure I liked Supership at the time but it does sound really dated.
My Latin brother is a great instrumental and this vinyl is different from a lot of my mouldy oldies in that the B is in great condition with virtually no scratches where a lot of my others have good condition A sides and B sides that sound like they've been used as coasters?

Dr Feelgood - Roxette

To celebrate the first showing of Oil City Confidential at the national film theatre this Friday here's what I consider to be their best song.
"Roxette" and "Keep it out of sight" which were both recorded live at the Kursaal in Southend.


The film itself is a documentary by Julien Temple detailing the rise and fall of the best pub rock group ever.
Quote from film blurb - "Members of The Clash, Blondie and The Sex Pistols join the surviving members of Dr Feelgood and collaborators Jools Holland and Alison Moyet to tell the story of Canvey, 70's England and the greatest local band in the world."

I'm not sure if the film will make a general release or just turn up on Channel 4 one night? but I'll be looking out for it as I was lucky enough to see them twice in the seventies.

Golden Earring - Moontan

One of the first "prog" style albums I ever bought back in the mid Seventies, mainly due to loving "Radar love" and the naked lady on the cover :)
As it goes the extended version of Radar love ended up the least played of the 5 tracks as I thought the others were brilliant and were a good introduction to the many overblown prog tracks I would buy later. This is still a favourite of mine.
The CD versions I've seen of this have a different track listing for some reason? track 4 Big Tree Blue Sea is missing and replaced by the B-side of Radar love "Just like Vince Taylor" and an extra track called Suzy Lunacy which devalue it a bit.

Me being me - Despite a mighty back catalogue from nearly 50 years of recording I could never really get into any of their other albums, a problem I suffer from with a lot of the early stuff I bought as a kid? I saved up my money to buy about one album a month and listened to it so many times until it was imprinted on my brain, every lyric every note, with so much music now being so freely available at the click of a button there isn't time for one album to have that brain-washing effect it had then. Better music came along and the moment was gone.

The Pretenders - Pretenders

Never really decided if I was a fan of the Pretenders, this album demonstrates a range of styles with almost classic punk in places but also some dull commercial stuff like Brass in Pocket.
Tattooed Love boys, Private Life and Precious are really great tracks though and probably why I've resisted the urge to sell this on.
The line up featured here suffered tragedy as guitarists Pete Farndon and James Honeyman Scott both died of drug overdoses within a few years of this coming out.
My personal feeling was that this album was as good as it got from the Pretenders.

Jamming Fanzine

And now for something completely different ...
Another find in the boxes in the loft an old punk fanzine called Jamming, I used to have a few of these fanzines but it seems this is the only one left intact.
Just looked it up on the net and it says it's from April 79 and is moderatly rare although it must be a hard thing to authenticate as it's basically just photocopies stapled together.
I bought this in a record shop up London around 79 so it should be an original, those I've seen for sale have a different colour front page?
Features on Prag Vec, Sid Vicious, Rezillos, Lurkers, Bill Nelson and a variety of other stuff in typical fanzine style.

Clash - Demos 76-79

Another from the "Destroy Tapes" series, mainly a collection of demos from the Polydor, CBS and "give 'em enough rope" sessions.
Most of these were available recently on the DOA album although I think the quality is better here suprisingly? must be some technical reason why the CD version sounds so flat compared to this cassette version.
Incidentally the cover tracklisting misses Stay Free but it was on the tape, although it ends a bit sudden so the tape might have ran out.

The Best Gig I Never Went To

Hunting through my old junk I came across this bit of paper torn from "Sounds" from sometime in 1976, I had fancied going to this gig as I had been to a couple of shows at the Kursaal Southend before and at the time was trying to see at least one band a week as I had just started earning.
The Pistols turned up on Janet Street Porters Sunday morning show "the London Weekend Show" and thought I've gotta get along to that.
A little later they appeared on TV with Bill Grundy and the rest is history as they say.
The gig was cancelled and at the time it seemed like no big deal as most of the bands I saw at the time were never heard of again, but with hindsight it would have been amazing to have been there if it had gone ahead - The Sex Pistols, The Damned, The Clash and Johnny Thunder all playing here in Southend.
I think I ended up going to see the Shadows at the Cliffs instead!! very punk of me haha

I didn't have a CD player at the time this came out so had to search far and wide for a vinyl version, and could only find this 12" version which I'm glad I bought.

Ravenscroft's sax solo is probably one of the most recognisable pieces of music around and elevates a pretty ordinary song into the classics.

First of 3 saxophone classics.
This was in my opinion the best thing that Hazel ever did, I'd bought all the earlier singles from the "breaking glass" soundtrack but was never really a fan, but her voice on this one is far superior.

Incidentally does anyone remember the title of the kids TV show she was in before her film break, sure she played a punk rocker but can't remember much else about it.

Really pleased with the quality of this cassette considering the age of the tape and how many times it was played in the car.
A real good selection of alternative artists and styles which introduced me to several of these bands who went on to become famous for the first time.
A record Mirror compilation although I can't remember if this was cover mounted or I had to collect tokens for it, but I'm glad I got it either way.
Favourites for me were the Lloyd Cole, Win and Pogues tracks.

Is there anyone in my age group who didn't fancy Kate Bush, I often wonder if I'd have even listened to any of her stuff if I'd never seen her or if she was ugly or even ordinary? None of her tracks really fit with the stuff I was listening to at the time, but I'm so glad I did :)

Back Again, Hopefully back for good now? (although I know I've said that before).
Internet bill paid and I've gone cold turkey on my Facebook addiction which wasted so much time when I was online earlier this year, being offline for 2 months made me realise what was important (..and it ain't Facebook)
Just gotta update all my AV's and stuff and I'm back in the fold.

What a fucking shit year this has been for a huge variety of reasons but one thing that keeps you going is music.
A trip back to the music of my youth cheers me up no end and I can associate certain tracks with happy times throughout my life, and if that fails it's straight on to the Madness collection which should make everyone smile.

Sex Pistols - Live At The Screen On The Green Islington 1976

Another one from 1976 these are the Pistols tracks from the Midnight Special gig at the Screen on the Green in Islington London.
The Clash and Buzzcocks were both on the same bill that night, so quite a night for anyone who attended.
I wasn't there so I can't vouch for authenticity although I believe it's the real thing.

Sex Pistols - Live At Chelmsford Prison

Originally recorded in 1976 this CD was released in 2000 although I've read that a lot of the crowd reaction was cut including a near riot after anarchy.Strangely despite living within 15 miles of Chelmsford I never go there, apart from two appearances at the crown court, where luckily I've avoided visiting the venue for this CD :)
Incidently the cover picture is misleading as Glenn Matlock was still in the band when this was recorded.

Loved watching the video of this song, Debbie at her best.
So many people have said to me that they prefer the original Nerves version, well sorry to come across as a plastic punk but I like this version best, the Nerves one was OK but they never had a gorgeous blonde frontwoman so to my mind there was no competition :)
