John Foxx - Burning Car

John Foxx was the original singer with Ultravox, who in my opinion produced most of his best stuff after going solo.
Always seemed strange that Ultravox only seemed to gain recognition after he left and they replaced him with boy band singer Midge Ure?

Here's Burning car which is a pretty good track, the B side is the excellent 20th century which was used as the theme tune to 20th Century Box a "youth" programme of the early eighties presented by Danny Baker.

Tom Robinson Band

Remember seeing the Tom Robinson band on Janet Street Porter's LWT show before any of these came out, so I knew when I bought them what Tom's views were.
It probably seems strange now but at the time you didn't actually admit to mates that you liked TRB for fear of being called a queer or something worse.
For the record I'm not and never have been gay, but my views were that the guy made some very good music so it didn't matter one jot if I didn't agree with his sexual preferences.
Songs like "Glad to be gay" and "Power in the darkness" are top quality protest songs that deserve to be heard.

2-4-6-8 Motorway / I shall be released
Possibly one of Tom's weakest tracks, but it got him known to the masses so it was a justified first single.

Rising Free EP (Live)
Don't take no for an answer / (Sing if you're) Glad to be gay
/ Martin / Right on sister

Up against the wall / I'm alright Jack

Bully for you / Our people
Not the best singing Tom's ever done but still a powerful song

Too good to be true / Power in the darkness

Loved this song and it's backed with one of TRB's best protest tracks.

The Doll

The Doll were one of those bands that appeared in the late punk era that promised a lot but didn't really deliver in the end.
Desire me hit the chart and I rushed out and bought it, but it does sound dated now although an essential for any large new wave compilation.

The follow up single failed to trouble the charts and I never heard of them again.
Don't Tango always reminds me of the Rocky Horror show for some reason.
Anyway reasonable pop songs that deserve a listen.

Desire Me / TV Addict

Don't Tango On My Heart / Trash
