Various - England Songs 2010

Every World Cup we get a selection of England songs, some are good and lots are bad this year is no exception, Here are 20 I've found this time, the Good the Bad and the Ugly.

There are a few that grow on you with a few listens, but chances are you'll only listen to them until England get knocked out anyway, hopefully I'll still be playing them after July 11th, enjoy it while it lasts.

New Order - (The Best Of) New Order

Titled the best of New Order but I don't agree, personally I would expect the originals of songs like Blue monday and true faith rather than the later remixes but that's my opinion.
Don't get me wrong this is an excellent compilation of New Order's back catalogue and includes most of the finest songs of their first 14 years.
I still have the vinyl version of this which was one of the last new vinyl albums I bought before finally going down the CD route.
Also it has the classic "world in motion" at track 16 as it's world cup time again.

01 - True Faith 94
02 - Bizarre Love Triangle 94
03 - 1963 94
04 - Regret
05 - Fine Time
06 - The Perfect Kiss
07 - Shell Shock
08 - Thieves Like Us

Various - Avon Calling The Bristol Compilation

Was listening to an old John Peel show and he mentioned this which I'd forgotten about luckily I checked the old files and found I already had it.
Basically the best of Bristol's "new wave" scene from the late seventies and it sounds great :)
Strangely the first track starts with a Peel clip mentioning this album, although it says there are only 15 tracks? so I have to assume this is a later version.

Various - Spools Paradise RMC60 1985

Really pleased with the quality of this cassette considering the age of the tape and how many times it was played in the car.
A real good selection of alternative artists and styles which introduced me to several of these bands who went on to become famous for the first time.
A record Mirror compilation although I can't remember if this was cover mounted or I had to collect tokens for it, but I'm glad I got it either way.
Favourites for me were the Lloyd Cole, Win and Pogues tracks.

Win - You've Got The Power
Pet Shop Boys - Opportunities (Let's Make Lots Of Money)
Lizzie Tear - Kima (Hey! Ma Ma!)
Brilliant - Ruby Fruit Jungle
Colourbox - Arena

Virginia Astley - I Live In Dreams
Hipsway - Forbidden
Del Amitri - Heard Through A Wall
Lloyd Cole And The Commotions - Rattlesnakes (Live)

Various - Exposed No. III New Noise For The Nineties

Some of my old cassettes are virtually unplayable these days but a few like this one sound as good as ever luckily.
Another random selection of bands on this cover mounted cassette which I assume came with Exposed magazine although that's long gone.
The Bjork album track is the only one most people would have heard before.

Wild Orchids - Traffic Of Tears
Frenzy - (It's A) Mad Mad World

Various - Beserkley Anthology

A bonus disc with the Jonathan Richman one below, this includes most of the other Beserkley records to hit the playlists in the late seventies / early eighties era.
One surprise for me was the exclusion of the Smirks, I only owned records on this label by JR, The Rubinoos and The Smirks but have looked into it and it seems they fell out with the label after releasing the 2 songs I used to have, which probably explains it.
Of the rest I knew Greg Kihn and the Tyla Gang but the rest were new to me.

01 Earth Quake - Tall Order For A Short Guy
02 Greg Kihn - All The Right Reasons
03 Earth Quake - Mr Security
04 Rubinoos - Gorilla
05 Earth Quake - Friday On My Mind
06 Rubinoos - I Think We're Alone Now
07 Greg Kihn - Madison Avenue

19 Tyla Gang - Oakland Red
20 Spitballs - Way Over There
21 Rubinoos - Jennifer
22 Greg Kihn - Jeopardy

Jonathan Richman And The Modern Lovers - Home Of The Hits

Jonathan Richman another of those artists you tend to associate with punk rock but when you listen all these years later you wonder why?

Various Artists - Oversell

This compilation from 1979 was only available after collecting tokens from the Record Mirror and sending off for it, and hopefully being around when the postie tried to cram it into your letterbox :)
A bit of a mix musically as all the artists were on the Virgin label, some excellent Punk/New Wave from the Skids, Members, Records and my own favourite "Gut feeling" by Devo which has one of the greatest intros ever, as well as some good reggae and even some great prog rock from Tangerine Dream.
I hadn't played it since the early eighties so I've just played it over and over for hours, great stuff.

Members - Soho-A-Go-Go
Records - Paint Your Face
Fingerprintz - Night Nurse
Gladiators - Get Ready
Tangerine Dream - Excerpt From Cloudburst Flight

Skids - Integral Plot
Devo - Gut Feeling
Culture - They Love In This Time
Supercharge - I Think I'm Gonna Fall In Love
Twinkle Brothers - King Pharoh
Julie Covington - Barbara's Song

Various Artists - Debut 03

These albums/magazines came out in the mid eighties and would have been a good collection, as it turns out I only bought 2 and the other wasn't as good (and is long gone).
Not sure how many were actually released (this is number 3) but I'm guessing it didn't have a very long run?
Nice collection of mixed songs with my highlights being the King Kurt and Bourgie Bourgie tracks and the strange but brilliant Blancmange track.
A few other well known artists thrown in such as the Bluebells and Prefab Sprout, as far as I know the Belouis Some track was the only one to hit the chart.

Bourgie Bourgie - Breaking Point
Friends Again - Moon 3
Bluebells - Everybody's Somebody's Fool
Folk Devils - Chewing The Flesh
Prefab Sprout - Spinning Belinda
Belouis Some - Some People

Shriekback - Suck
King Kurt - Riders In The Sky
Fashion - Hurricane
Red Guitars - Within Four Walls
Blancmange - Vishnu

Various - Mashed Punks

Thought about calling this selection "Sacrilege" as it didn't seem right to be using classic punk/new wave tunes in a dance orientated way, but from the first one I heard GHP's "Ray of Gob" I quickly changed my opinion Mark Vidler had made such a good job of it that I ended up searching for more.
Sort of lost interest when it became a bit more professional, so most of these are from about 5 years back and are mostly rough and ready mashes.
All have a punk/new wave link so hopefully you'll like them too.
I've credited the mash artist (in brackets) where I can remember them.

Various Artists - Cover Versions

I tend to either love or hate cover versions, if they are too similar to the original I'll label them as shite, or if a band has put their own distinctive mark on them I usually love them.
Here is a totally random selection, by no means the best and probably not even including all my favourites (just ones that sprung to mind without having to search too hard).

Ashes To Ashes - Series One

Ashes to Ashes is the follow up series to the highly rated "Life on Mars", which featured 2006 detective Sam Tyler being thrown back to 1973.
For this series replace Sam with female detective Alex Drake who is this time thrown back to 1981 to solve the mystery of her parents death.
All far fetched but good entertainment :)
Also the series featured some great 80's music, the official soundtrack only features 19 of the 66 tracks used plus some dialogue and title themes.

VA - X Files Movie Soundtrack

Being an X Files fan I bought the soundtrack album and was annoyed to find out none of the vocal tracks were on it (should've checked first).

VA - Switched On (The Cool Sound Of TV Advertising)

Switched On (The Cool Sound Of TV Advertising)

Like the Essential soundtracks album I picked this up after collecting a pile of vouchers from some product that I can't actually remember?
So glad I did as this is a brilliant collection of songs.
I can't remember how many times I've only discovered bands just because one of their tracks was used in an advert and it's stuck in my head.
Not sure if it really works on an advertising level as I often can't think what the product was and it's only through compilations like this that I find the music, this is from around 2001.
