X Ray Spex - The Day The World Turned Day Glo

As far as I'm concerned this is one of top five tracks from the punk era, will never tire of listening to it.
This came on orange (Dayglo) vinyl.

01 - The Day The World Turned Day-Glo
02 - Iama Poseur

Dave And Ansil Collins - Double Barrell

Classic Ska / Reggae from Dave and Ansil Collins.
Despite being nearly 40 years old this disc is in pretty good condition.
The B Side is listed as Version 2, although it's hard to tell the difference.

A - Double Barrell
B - Double Barrell (Version 2)

Clash - Remote Control

This was the second CBS single, and I've read that they released it without the Clash's permission.
The song failed to hit the chart after the minor chart success of White Riot.

A - Remote Control
B - London's Burning (Live)

Clash - Clash City Rockers

Here's the Clash's 3rd hit single (reached no.35 in March 78).

A - Clash City Rockers
B - Jail Guitar Doors

Roddy Radiation And The Specials - Braggin And Tryin Not To Lie

The single states "free single not for sale" so it was possibly given away with an album? I picked this up in a job lot of 7'' vinyls at a boot sale so I don't know the full history.
I've seen these tracks on a couple of the many two tone compilations so probably not as rare as I'd hoped, but well worth a listen for anyone into ska / 2-tone.

Roddy Radiation And The Specials - Braggin And Tryin Not To Lie
Neville Staples AKA Judge Roughneck - Rude Boys Outa Jail (Version)

England New Order - World In Motion

The Greatest football song ever released.
I was a huge New Order fan at the time and considering how bad every previous England song had been before it didn't have much competition.
18 years later and it's still a great song even if you're not a footy fan.
Included is the B-side cleverly titled "The B Side" with an alternate version of the main tune and also Keith Allen's dodgy John Barnes impression and some "rapping" by the other less talented England players.

A - World In Motion
B - The B Side

Sandie Shaw - Hand In Glove

Here we have the unlikely pairing of Sandie Shaw and the Smiths.
As I remember Sandie Shaw and Morrissey had a mutual admiration of each others songs and after meeting up Sandie recorded various Smiths tracks with Marr, Rourke and Joyce.
I've come across several tracks recorded but believe this was the only official release.

A - Hand In Glove
B - I Don't Owe You Anything

Emerson Lake And Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery (Flexi Disc)

I got this flexi disc free with the New Musical Express (NME) back in around 1973 when I was still a kid.
I've kept it all these years in the hope it would be worth a lot of money, but just checked and found out you can still pick it up for less than a fiver :-(
Anyway it served it's purpose and when I started earning I went out and bought the album.
Strangely the album didn't include the title track? (although I think later CD versions do).

1 - Brain Salad Surgery
2 - Excerpts From Brain Salad Surgery

Patti Smith Group - Because The Night

Surprisingly this was the only Patti Smith song to hit the UK charts (hitting no.5 in 1978).
Because the night was co-written with Bruce Springsteen.

A - Because The Night
B - God Speed

Associates - Club Country

This was the second of 3 top 40 hits that the Associates had from 1982.
Although I bought various singles from these at the time I didn't fully appreciate the genius that was the late Billy McKenzie until much later.

There is a slight "scratch" noise on the run out of this disc due to the label being overprinted (see pic).
(Reminds me that I must clean my scanner, the record wasn't that dusty)

A - Club Country
B - AG It's You Again

VA - Switched On (The Cool Sound Of TV Advertising)

Switched On (The Cool Sound Of TV Advertising)

Like the Essential soundtracks album I picked this up after collecting a pile of vouchers from some product that I can't actually remember?
So glad I did as this is a brilliant collection of songs.
I can't remember how many times I've only discovered bands just because one of their tracks was used in an advert and it's stuck in my head.
Not sure if it really works on an advertising level as I often can't think what the product was and it's only through compilations like this that I find the music, this is from around 2001.

VA - Club Hits 97/98 (Soundtrack To A Season)

A 2 Disc compilation featuring a lot of the music used in Sky Sports Premier league coverage during the 97/98 season.

Devo - Jocko Homo / Mongoloid

Devo's finest in my opinion, Jocko Homo and Mongoloid on one single.

A Jocko Homo
B Mongoloid

Burundi Steiphenson Black - Burundi Black

The music that inspired Adam Ant.
I remember my next door neighbour playing this loud when I was a kid, used to drive my dad mad as he thought the Zulus were invading :)
Part one includes Mike Steiphenson's organ? (an early remix?), part two is the original drums of the Burundi.

A - Burundi Black (Part One)
B - Burundi Black (Part Two)

Patrick Allen - Elusive

Elusive - A fragrance ballad with the voice of Patrick Allen.

Had to post this as it's just strange and creepy.
One of those flexi discs given away with Avon cosmetics.
It has a folky style song that sounds like something from one of those psychedelic sixties movies, then Mr "Protect and Survive" Patrick Allen comes in with a sales pitch for their new fragrance "elusive", (you keep expecting him to talk about labelling bodies and avoiding fallout).
I've no idea when this was made probably late 60's, early 70's?

Rubinoos - I Think We're Alone Now

Brilliant cover of the Tommy James classic by the Rubinoos in 1977, 10 years before that bloody Tiffany cover which totally ruined the song and sadly had more success?
Still love this version.

A - I Think We're Alone Now
B - As Long As I'm With You

Jonathan Richman - Roadrunner

Classic from Jonathan Richman, there seems to be many versions of this song around, here is the original single versions.

A - Roadrunner Once
B - Roadrunner Twice

Sugarcubes - Walkabout

One more from the Sugarcubes, the 7" vinyl of Walkabout.

A - Walkabout (Alternative Mix)
B - Stone Drill - In The Rock

Roxy Music - Love Is The Drug

Roxy's excellent "Love is the drug" plus the excellent B-Side "Sultanesque" which as far as I know doesn't feature on any of their albums.
It's a 5+ minute instrumental which sounds aboriginal (or Rolf Harris?) to me.
Pure brilliance in my opinion, but I have weird tastes in music :)

A - Love Is The Drug
B - Sultanesque

Jimmy Cliff - Wild World

I imagine everyone who likes it has a pristine remastered CD version, whereas this is a scratchy original 7" vinyl version picked up in poor condition at a rainy boot sale recently.
But it's a classic and I like the sound :)

A - Wild World
B - Be Aware

Bruce Ruffin - Rain

I won't lie, this record is not perfect a fair bit of scratch noise.
It was a record I chased for years, as I really wanted the B-side "Geronimo" and couldn't find it anywhere, until finally getting hold of this copy in a market.

A - Rain
B - Geronimo

7" Singles

Still get a bit depressed when I go through the vinyls as I seem to have more crap than good stuff.Years of buying and selling have seen most of my original collection go, to be replaced with job lots of stuff I haven't been able to give away.
I know it's hard to turn down a box of 500+ singles for a pound, but it's left me with singles by "artists" like New Kids on the block, Sonia, Jason Donovan and other assorted junk that I wouldn't have touched in my collecting days.

Bjork - Bachelorette

Probably my favourite Bjork song, although it's very close as she's done so much good stuff.

01 - Bachelorette (Radio Edit)
02 - My Snare
03 - Scary
04 - Bachelorette (Howie Spread Mix)

Bjork - Venus As A Boy

Love this song, enuff said :)

01 Venus As A Boy (Edit)
02 Venus As A Boy (7'' Dream Mix)

Bjork - Possibly Maybe (CD2)

This is listed as No.2 of 3 in a collection of CD singles for Possibly Maybe.
Strangely the only version of the song on this CD is track 3?
Anyway for Bjork fans, this contains 4 good remixes of various tracks.

01 - Cover Me (Dillinja Mix)
02 - One Day (Trevor Morais Mix)
03 - Possibly Maybe (Calcutta Cyber Cafe Dub Mix)
04 - I Miss You (Photek Mix)

Mark Snow - The X-Files

I was a big fan of the X files (at least until Mulder left), cost me a fortune at the time.
After home recording every episode on VHS, I ended up buying the entire video collection in box sets which still sit unopened in a drawer and are probably worth a fraction of what I paid for them due to the onset of DVD.
Also bought 3 CD albums (2 from the film, and music from the series) plus this single.
I've heard there is a new X-Files film coming out this year, hopefully it will be better than the original film as that was disappointment after the hype.

01 - The X-Files (Original Version)
02 - The X-Files (Terrestial Mix))
03 - The X-Files (P.M. Dawn Remix)

Air - Radio #1

Something a bit different from the usual Air style.

01 - Radio #1
02 - Radio #1 (JP Cristal Remix)
03 - Flowerhead
04 - Radio #1 (Video)

Collapsed Lung - Eat My Goal

Collapsed Lung were an Essex hip-hop band who will probably only be remembered for this track, which got a lot of air play and a chart position around the 1998 world cup.
Also used on a few adverts it is guaranteed to turn up on all future footie related compilations.
Say Ho!!

01 - Eat My Goal (Original)
02 - Eat My Goal (Mardi Grass Mix)
03 - Eat My Goal (Jackpot Goalie Mix)
04 - Eat My Goal (Synchromesh Terror On The Terraces Mix)
05 - Eat My Goal (Black Cats Mix)
06 - Eat My Goal (Instrumental Mix)

Babybird - Goodnight

As far as I know Babybird had been around for a long time before this song finally gave them some chart success.
Some odd lyrics doesn't take away from a great pop song.
Shame he released the awful "you're gorgeous" after this :)

01 - Goodnight
02 - July
03 - Harry And Ida Swop Teeth

Oasis - Wonderwall

A classic moment from Oasis.

01 - Wonderwall
02 - Round Are Way
03 - The Swamp Song
04 - The Masterplan

Run DMC Vs Jason Nevins - It's Like That

One of the best remixes ever done, the beat is superb.

01 - It's Like That (Drop The Break Radio Edit)
02 - It's Like That (Jason's Battle Blaster)
03 - It's Like That (Drop The Break)

Shanks And Bigfoot - Sweet Like Chocolate

Mellow tune, which at the time you couldn't get out of your head.

01 - Sweet Like Chocolate (Shanks and Bigfoot Radio Edit)
02 - Sweet Like Chocolate (Metro 7 Remix)
03 - Sweet Like Chocolate (Shanks and Bigfoot Original Mix)
04 - Sweet Like Chocolate (Ruff Driverz Vocal)

01 - Encore Une Fois (Blunt Radio Edit)
02 - Encore Une Fois (Future Breeze Mix)
03 - Encore Une Fois (La Casa Di Tokapi)
04 - Encore Une Fois (Dancing Divaz Misc Mix)
05 - Encore Une Fois (The Powerplant Toke On This Mix)
06 - Encore Une Fois (Original 12'')

Phats And Small - Turn Around

01 - Turn Around (Radio Edit)
02 - Turn Around (Norman Cook Remix)
03 - Turn Around (Chris & James Remix)

Lucid - I Can't Help Myself

Classic trance/club tune, play loud.

01 - I Can't Help Myself (Radio Edit)
02 - I Can't Help Myself (Judge Jules Vocal Edit)
03 - I Can't Help Myself (Alternative Radio Mix)
04 - I Can't Help Myself (The Lucid Vocal Mix)

Daft Punk - One More Time

Here goes with a small selection of the better dance singles from a few years back, starting with this classic by Daft Punk.
Although I liked most of their earlier stuff, this was the first one I had to go and buy.

01 - One More Time (Short Radio Edit)
02 - One More Time (Radio Edit)
03 - One More Time (Club Mix)

Bedlam Ago Go - Season No 5

This track received a lot of air play when it was released, but failed to trouble the charts for some reason.
This CD single contains 5 different versions/mixes of the main tune, which was the norm with early CD singles before they changed the rules of eligibilty for the charts, afterwards a CD would only be eligible for chart position if it contained a maximum of 3 tracks.
Although multiple mixes of the same tune probably only appeals to fans of the band and anoraks, in the same way as 2 disc film DVD's containing hours of dull extras seem a waste of time to me.

01 - Season No. 5 Radio Edit
02 - Season No. 5 Regular Fries Mix
03 - Season No. 5 Forest Fire Dub
04 - Season No. 5 Remainder Dub
05 - Season No. 5 Album Version

Was Not Was - Shake Your Head

The title track features Ozzy Osbourne and Kim Basinger?
Odd selection but it works brilliantly.
Must try to find my vinyl version as I'm sure it has an alternative version of Shake your head on the B Side.

01 - Shake Your Head
02 - Spy In The House Of Love
03 - I Blew Up The United States
04 - Robot Girl

Garbage - I Think I'm Paranoid

My favourite Garbage track, nothing much more to say ;)

01 - I Think I'm Paranoid
02 - I Think I'm Crystalized (Extended Edit)
03 - I Think I'm Paranoid Purity Mix (Jill Stark)

LCD - Zorba's Dance

Here's a novelty item from the late 90's, LCD "The World's first digital supergroup".
The video was quite cutting edge at the time, but looks very amateur now, Shows how much technology has come on in ten years.

01 - Zorba's Dance (Radio Version)
02 - Zorba's Dance (Slow Start)
03 - Zorba's Dance (Miss Marisa's Mix)
04 - Theme From The Z Files
05 - Zorba's Dance (Video)

Papa Roach - Last Resort

I am grateful to bands like Papa Roach, Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit for dragging kids back into rock music when it looked like every kid and teen was being forced to either listen to R'n'B (Eminem, Ja Rule, Jay-Z etc) or stuck with Pop bands like Steps and Atomic Kitten.
This was probably as good as it got from Papa Roach but the influence spread well.

01 - Last Resort
02 - Last Resort (Live BBC Radio 1 Evening Session)
03 - Between Angels And Insects (Live BBC Radio 1 Evening Session)

Manic Street Preachers - Lipstick Traces

Lipstick Traces A Secret History of The Manic Street Preachers.
This is a 2 disc compilation, Disc 1 consists of B-sides and rarities, Disc 2 contains a variety of cover versions.
I really like this album, despite the initial feeling it was just a filler album with a few unreleased tracks to lure Manics fans into buying it, the cover versions are excellent.

Disc 1
01 - Prologue To History
02 - 4 Ever Delayed
03 - Sorrow 16
04 - Judge Yr'self

Manic Street Preachers - Forever Delayed (Special Edition)

I really like the Manics despite some of the more recent "average" tracks, this double disc compilation comprises of a "best of" CD, and a remixes CD.
