Steve Lamacq is a British DJ on Radio 1 who tends to play tracks you wouldn't hear on most other national stations.
This CD given away with the Melody maker has a reasonable selection of tracks including live sessions.
The tracks include Lamacq introducing most of them, so should be played in order.

Another Vox magazine compilation album.
I didn't even have to buy the mag for this one, as I bought it at a boot sale for 50p :)
I think this is an excellent compilation, as the tracks are totally diverse with something for everyone.
Highlights include an alternate version of the Specials "Free Nelson Mandella", live tracks by Ian Hunter and Sinead O'Connor, Blondie's "Sunday girl" sung in French and artists as diverse as The Ramones and Jethro Tull.
Good stuff.

Mainly picked this up to get a decent copy of "Holiday in Cambodia" which I only had on tape before.

The cover says 20 New Wave hits from the 70's and 80's and it's true the tracks are from those decades, but not sure if some of the tracks are really new wave?
Still it's a pretty good collection of tunes including a few compilation standards and some that rarely get a mention.
I think Lou Reed got star billing as his "Perfect day" remake was riding high in the charts at the time.

The King - Gravelands

Gravelands by Jimmy "The King" Brown.
I bought this years ago after it was recommended by Bob Geldof on his XFM show, Jimmy is Irish but does an excellent Elvis voice.
The concept is he sings songs by dead people in his best Elvis Presley style, and it works.
Nirvana's "Come as your are" is superb, and other highlights include Joy Division's "Love will tear us apart".

Farmer's Boys - For You

A great follow up single from the Farmer's boys, which also sadly failed to hit the charts.
This was released as a double single with an excellent demo version of Muck on disc 2.
Another of those records that catch you out everytime by having one side at 45rpm and the other at 33rpm.

Disc 2 - Muck it out (demo), Drinking and dressing up, Something that I ate, I don't know why I don't like all my friends.

Farmer's Boys - Muck it Out

Back in 1983 I was listening to evening radio and the DJ played 2 tracks by new bands which stuck in my head and forced me out the next day to track them down.

This was one and the other was the Smiths "Hand in Glove".
At the time I thought the Farmer's Boys would go far but I wasn't sure about the Smiths (shows what I know).

Still loving this track although I stopped following their career after a few singles as they never hit the heights of the early stuff again.

Actually bought this by mistake but still interesting to hear alternate versions of some better known songs

Elvis Costello - Accidents Will Happen

This single was given away with the "Armed Forces" album and contains three live tracks recorded at the Hollywood high.
Never lucky enough to see him live in his prime, but I wish I had if this was the standard of live performance.

Otway And Barrett - DK50/80

A really odd song from John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett (I love it), this was the follow up to Really Free and failed to get the same success sadly.
A Side - DK50/80 (Otway and Barrett)
B Side - It's a long long time since I heard homestead on the farm (Otway) / The Homestead on the farm (Barrett)
The cover is confusing as it has the b-side tracks in reverse order and calls Barrett's track Homestead on the range.
The disc calls Otway's track It's a long long time time etc, whereas the cover only has one long and one time in the title.
Confused .... never mind :)

Killing Joke - Empire Song

This was the first Killing Joke song I ever heard, so I assumed they were a punk band .. I was wrong.
Still my fave track of their's closely followed by Love like blood from later in their career.

Skids - Sweet Suburbia (The Best Of)

This is the Skids greatest hits, or more properly titled "best of" as they didn't hit the chart often.
The singles stand out with classics like into the valley, the saints are coming and Working for the Yankee dollar but the rest all grow on you with enough plays.
Shame that Jobson comes across as such an arse on telly, seemed to choose a strange career path after the band split.
Stuart Adamson left to form the equally good Big Country and continued in the music biz for many years after.

Toyah - Bird In Flight

One more Toyah vinyl, here we have Bird in Flight with Tribal Look on the B-side.
Personally prefer Tribal look but everyone has different tastes.
These tracks weren't on the early albums.

probably my favourite single of hers.

Apache Indian - Nuff Vibes EP

I find Apache Indian's tracks a bit hit or miss, some outstanding but many just average, here's everyone favourite track by him the ultra catchy Boom Shack-a-lak.

Big Audio Dynamite + Others

These 7" Vinyl EP's were given away with the Record Mirror sellotaped to the cover.
This is just one of many that were given away in the early eighties.
This one contains tracks by Big Audio Dynamite, That Petrol Emotion and the Three Johns, so is slightly more interesting than some that were given away.

Split Enz - My Mistake

Came across this one on a compilation tape and have to say I'd completely forgotten about this group.
Remember seeing an old BBC programme called "sight and sound in concert" back in about 1977 which featured Split Enz and what an odd bunch they were, odd haircuts and over the top make up but they played some good songs.
Went out and bought this 12' single "My Mistake / Crosswords" and played it to death, but then sort of forgot them due to the blossoming punk/new wave era.

Ian Dury And The Music Students

Ian Dury And The Music Students - 4000 Weeks Holiday.
Another cassette, quality is not too bad no obvious distortion that happens sometimes with old cassettes.
This one's from 1984 and spawned a couple of singles which failed to trouble the charts, it's surprising that although Dury is so well known he only had 4 top 40 hits!!

John Peel Show 19/03/80

I came across this old tape which had part of a John Peel show from (as far as I can find out) 19th March 1980.
Only 44 mins sadly (one side of a C90) but well worth a listen to hear Peel in his prime.

Repo Man - Various Artists

Repo Man Soundtrack 1984
Can't think of another movie that I've only watched because of the opening theme tune.
Remember this being on the telly and thinking it didn't sound too interesting and was going to turn over, then Iggy's theme tune started pumping out and I was hooked.
It's an ok movie, but the soundtrack makes it memorable.

Music from Iggy Pop, Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies, The Circle Jerks, The Plugz, Burning Sensations, Fear and The Juicy Bananas.

New Wave - Various Artists

This was the first Punk (New Wave) compilation I ever bought, released around 1978 on the Vertigo label.
Although some tracks don't fit the general pattern it's an excellent collection.

The Damned and Boomtown Rats are the British representatives amongst a mainly American line up including The Ramones, Dead Boys, Richard Hell, Patti Smith etc.
 Aussie band The Skyhooks is an odd inclusion but it's a great track.
 Highlights for me are Piss Factory by Patti Smith, Shake some Action by the Flaming Groovies and New Rose.
It also includes 2 tracks by the New York Dolls which were released several years earlier but are a welcome addition.
